Midnight Sun

Well, of course, we were in the Land of the Midnight Sun, so we had to see it. It is not just a story. Here, the sun really does fail to set for two months. We were here at the end of the season, but we still had a few days to see it, so we armed ourselves with cameras, sunglasses, suncream, and parasoles, and headed for the ridge.

• The sun failing to set over Vesterålen, with Tilthornet (693 metres) to the right. I was struggling to make the camera make the pictures dark enough.
• It casts a beautiful orange glow as it passes above the peaks of Vesterålen. The peaks are about 900 metres high, and we were at 250 metres, so the sun was significantly above the natural horizon.
• It is still easily bright enough to see - Tanøya, Vesterålen, and Tilthornet are all easily visible.
• Yes, you can see Claudio too
• And I am wearing sunglasses, it is 00:45 (natural midnight) and I am wearing sunglasses - and I can still see perfectly.
• A sjark on Stordjupet, with Tilthornet at 01:00.
• Vest-Hamarøy at 00:15 (heights are covered in the Steigen gallery).
• The sun is forced to set over Stordjupet at 01:45 because Tilthornet gets in the way.
