Area summary
Mid Wales is dominated by vast unpopulated areas, boggy moorlands, forests, and farmland. There are a few dedicated cycling areas in forests such as Hafran, including some single track routes around the Pumlumon area. Most of the countryside is, however, too boggy to ride on, and routes can only be forged along popular walking routes (of which there are few), or forestry tracks. Most of the cycling in other areas takes place on the backroads or access tracks. It is possible to cycle on major roads too, and the general driving speed is almost as slow as a fast bike anyway. Parking is possible just about anywhere you want, typically on verges. Be aware though that inhabited areas and farms are sometimes very unwelcoming to visitors, so make sure you stick to land which the public have access to.
Bike hire is available in a few places, such as the Hafren Forest and Rhayader, and nearby areas in North or South Wales.
