Area summary

The Peak District is an excellent cycling area. It has a good range of cycle routes, starting with beginner routes along old railway lines, all the way up to multi-day epic mountain routes. The mountains are only just high enough to be classed as such, but what they lack in height they make up for with long and sometimes very demanding downhills. Several booklets and publications give a large variety of cycling routes, such as the Peak District Mountain Bike Routes or Peak District National Park Cycle Routes booklets.

The more popular walking areas (particularly the high parts of the Pennine Way) are restricted to walkers-only, though in most cases, there are ample bridleways and challenging off-roading trails that serve as cycle routes. Sadly, a few of the good downhills have randomly placed gates which can break your stride while you are in the middle of your buzz, but these are thankfully few on the best routes. Going off-trail on the mountains is not advisable, as they are covered in thick bog and groughs, preventing cycling.

Road cycling is popular, but risky, since there are virtually no cycle lanes, and a lot of traffic. B roads have a higher speed limit than A roads, which have a restricted speed limit in an attempt to reduce motor-biker deaths. Green lanes are the preferred option, and many cycle routes will use them.

Parking is fairly easy with pull-ins, verges, and car parks. Most car parks are free except in larger or more popular towns. Parking areas will usually have enough space available except in very popular tourist towns. Car crime is high in some areas, so do not leave anything visible in your car.

Bike hire is available in most larger towns, and at the ends of popular beginner cycle routes. It usually costs about £10 per day, sometimes with a larger deposit if the bike is to be taken on a route that does not begin beside the hire shop.
