Chartist Cave trips 23/09/2023

This is a second gallery of this grid cave, and the first gallery covered it fairly well, as well as the cave's history. It does not have enough cave to earn a second gallery, but we were here with a camera, so here is a gallery anyway.

Unless otherwise stated, camera, setups, lighting, edits and gallery effects by Tarquin. Modelling and lighting at various points will be Steph Andrews.

  1. Garden spider busy eating a meal. Modelling by Dimmock
  2. View over to the main Brecon Beacons group. 3. The shakehole with a lake. Modelling by Steph, lighting by Tarquin and Steph
  4. Fox moth caterpillar. Modelling by Robin
  5. The Black Mountains, seen from just above the cave. Mynydd Troed (609 metres), a ridge of Mynydd Llangorse (515 metres), Waun Fach (811 metres), Mynydd Llysiau (663 metres), Pen y Gadair Fawr (800 metres), Pen Twyn Gas (646 metres), Pen Allt-mawr (719 metres), Pen Cerrig-calch (701 metres) and Crug Mawr (550 metres)
  6. Approaching the entrance, which is invisible from all directions until you are right in front of it. Modelling by Steph
  7. The entrance is a large, yawning hole, and it is almost a joke that it is so hard to see.
  8. Inside the entrance, where we added oversuits and helmets. The large, flat stone near the camera was once the table used for meetings by the Chartists, in preparation for the 1839 uprising. Modelling by Steph
  9. Golden microbial (bacterial) mats in the right side passage.
  10. The hydrophobic microbes cause water to bead up into droplets that glisten.
  11. The main chamber, looking towards the choke. I explored the horrifying passages heading into the choke, which open up into chambers, but there is nothing worth digging. Modelling by Steph, lighting by Tarquin and Steph
  12. The main chamber, looking out towards the entrance. Camera by Steph, setup by Tarquin and Steph, modelling by Tarquin, lighting by Steph and Tarquin
  13. The route to Sand Passage, at the top of a tricky climb.
  14. Sand Passage, most of which is a crawl. The survey says straws. Maybe tiny stubs at the far end.
  15. The main feature of Sand Passage is a 4 metre deep pit, which counteracts all the height gained on the climb. This has a tiny stream in wet weather, and this might be the stream that was dye traced to Ffynnon Siôn Sieffre, by the reservoir near Tredegar. There is no significant passage at the bottom.
  16. Beside the pit is a choke, beneath the crag by the entrance. Someone has tried digging it, but there is no point.
  17. The moon seen out through the entrance.
  18. Whispy clouds, like feathers.
  19. Cloud waves.
