Bontddu waterfall walk

Including Hirgwm Waterfalls.

Ability requirements (key)

Directions

From Cardiff, take the A470 to the Llanelltyd roundabout, just past Dolgellau. From Llanelltyd, take the first turnoff (left) onto the A496 towards Barmouth. At Bontddu, after passing the Halfway House pub, park in a parallel lane with a phone box beside the road on the right, beneath a converted church. SH 6698 1872.

Route

Walk up the steps to the converted church. On its left, a narrow path passes behind the next house, and into the Bontddu Glen. The path sits above the gorge without protection, so take care. There are a few good waterfalls in the gorge below. The path then moves away from the river, before a lane joins from a bridge on the left. Continue on the right bank of the river, taking a left to continue on the riverside track when the lane splits off to the right. The track continues upwards, eventually becoming just a path and reaching a lane at a bridge. The Hirgwm Waterfalls are on the left below the bridge.

If you want an alternative route back, follow the lane to the right until it descends to the main road. Turn right to get back to the start of the walk after 400 metres.
