Cothi Gorge waterfall walk

Including Pwll Uffern-Gothi.

Ability requirements (key)

Directions

From Cardiff, take the A470 to Brecon. From Brecon, take the second turnoff at the roundabout, along the A40 to Llandovery. From Llandovery, continue on the A40 towards Llandeilo, then after about 6 miles take the A482 towards Lampeter. Just before Pumsaint, take the lane to the right, signposted to the Dolaucothi Gold Mines. Pass the mines centre, and remain with the lane for a long way. It passes a long section above the river's little ravine with a crash barrier on the left side, before arriving at a farm with barns on both sides of the road. Park on the roadside here. SN 7235 4623.

Route

Walk past the farm to a track on the left. Take the track, heading left when it forks. After the fields end on the left end, the gorge begins below. The way down into the gorge must be chosen very carefully. Just after a stream (shown on the 1:25'000 map) passes under the track (currently, a fence on the left stops just before it), a buttress pointing out into the gorge offers a slope down on its right side, to reach the main Pwll Uffern-Gothi waterfall. Take great care, and only attempt this if you know you can cope with the terrain.

On the far side, a small stream tumbles down 30 metres of waterfalls, to land just upstream of the main waterfall. Below the waterfall, the stream cannot be followed, but just downstream was once the start of a Roman aquaduct, carrying the water to the gold mines.

A short distance further along the track, another powerful waterfall can be heard, which may be seen better from the remains of a path running a little below the track. Beyond here, the track reaches some farms and enters forestry on the right (which can be followed for a long way, close to the Pysgotwr gorge). However, I have not followed any of these, and do not know of any useful routes.
