Including a series of waterfalls in Elan Valley's Cwm Coel.
From Cardiff, take the A470 to Rhayader. From Rhayader, turn left onto the B4518 at the wonky junction with the clock tower in the town centre, towards the Elan Valley. Follow it past the first dam. Take the first left, to cross a bridge over the reservoir (actually a sunken dam). Immediately after the bridge, turn right into the Llanerchi parking area. SN 9092 6387.
Walk out of the parking area towards the road, then take a track to the left, running just above the water line of the reservoir. Follow it into the arm of the reservoir, until it crosses a bridge at the head of a waterfall. Just after the bridge, take a small path to the left, heading upstream along the right side of the stream. After 100 metres, this reaches a small waterfall. Just before this, a less obvious path climbs over a small rock outcrop to get around the waterfall. Continue following it upstream to reach the main Cwm Coel waterfall.
Experienced walkers may cross the stream, and ascend the far bank carefully to get up above the waterfall. Above it, there is a small cascade, a long water slide, and then the final waterfall, at the head of the one-sided gorge.
