Fforest waterfall walk

Including Aber Fforest Waterfall.

Ability requirements (key)

Directions

From Cardiff, take the M4 to junction 49, the end of the M4. From there, take the A48 to Camarthen. From Camarthen, take the A40 towards Fishguard. Follow it for a very long way to the Narberth roundabout, then take the third turnoff (right) onto the A487, signposted to Cardigan. After passing through Crymych and Blaenffos, turn left onto the B4332, signposted to Eglwyswrw. At the end of the road, turn left on the A487 towards Fishguard. Follow it to Newport/Trefdraeth. From Newport/Trefdraeth, continue along the A487 towards Fishguard for about 2 miles, to a point where there are two lay-bys on the right in quick succession, and just before the second one is a track (currently adorned with signs for Aberfforest Marine). Park in the second lay-by. SN 0285 3874.

Route

Follow the track down to Fforest, staying with it as it swings hard left. As it swings hard right, a path continues ahead into the woodland. Follow it to the head of the waterfall, where paths lead to the bottom of the waterfall. Follow one of the paths downstream to arrive at Aber Fforest bay. On the other side of the waterfall is a path leading up Cwm Dyffryn back to the A487, but I have not followed or graded that route.

Upstream of the main waterfall there is another one tucked into a little gorge. However, there is no path to it, and it requires walking up the stream bed, through undergrowth. Experienced walkers only.

The coastal path may be used to extend the walk in either direction from Aber Fforest bay. It is also possible to walk the coastal path all the way to the right, past Newport, to reach the Pen Pistyll waterfall, but the distance is too far for many walkers to complete there-and-back within a day.
