Directions

From Cardiff, take the A470 to Betws-y-Coed. From Betws-y-Coed, take the A5 towards Bangor. Follow the road to the far end of the lengthy village of Capel Curig, then turn left onto the A4068, signposted to Caernarfon. After passing the lakes, turn right by the Pen y Gwryd Hotel to remain on the A4086. Follow it to Llanberis. Turn left at the mini-roundabout, then take the first right to pass under the railway, and park somewhere near the first side road on the left. SH 5796 5956.

Route

The side road is in fact two side roads, the one on the left leading below the mountain railway viaduct, and the second passing over a cattle grid. Take the one on the right, cross the cattle grid, and pass the house on the left. Immediately behind their garden is a small path leading under the viaduct. Follow it to reach the river, and head upstream along the river, passing the lower waterfalls. The path ends at the main waterfall of Llanberis Falls, which lands in a small dammed plunge pool.

Return to the road with the cattle grid, and continue uphill along it. Just past a house on the right, go through a gate on the left to cross the mountain railway line (be careful - trains regularly use the line). On the other side is a grassy viewpoint, overlooking the main waterfall and the upper waterfalls. The view is best in winter when there are fewer leaves, but for the waterfall to show off its characteristic waterslide, the river should not be in flood. Return the same way.
