Pont Dolgarrog waterfall walk

Including Afon Ddu.

Ability requirements (key)

Directions

From Cardiff, take the A470 to Llanrwst. From Llanrwst, turn left onto the B5106, signposted to Trefriw. Immediately before Dolgarrog, the road passes over the narrow Pont Dolgarrog bridge - the first time since Trefriw that the road is reduced to a single lane. Park in the parking area immediately after the bridge. SH 7741 6633.

Route

Warning; this river is sourced in a reservoir that can suddenly release water, causing the river to flash flood. Keep away from the river bed. (Gorge walkers do use the river, but they usually obtain details about water releases.)

Take the concreted lane immediately opposite the entrance to the parking area (not the driveway to the left of the track). After zigzagging a couple of times, it crosses a cattle grid. At the next corner, experienced river walkers may leave the track and head over to the river to view the first waterfalls. Just after the lane turns the corner, it passes two small buildings. Behind them, a steep wall and pipe can be followed upwards by experienced walkers to a ledge overlooking the tallest of the single drop waterfalls.

Back on the lane, it climbs extremely steeply to reach the water treatment works building. On the left side of this is a large, flat area which gives a fairly good view through the trees in winter to the upper waterfalls. Take care near the edge, as it is a long way down, and there is no protection. Return using the access lane.
