Staylittle waterfall walk

Including Trawsnant Waterfall.

Ability requirements (key)

Directions

From Cardiff, take the A470 to the Llangurig roundabout. From Llangurig, take the second turnoff (right) at the roundabout, continuing on the A470. After 5 miles it reaches the Llanidloes roundabout. Take the first turnoff (left) to enter Llanidloes on the B4518. At the little roundabout, take the third exit (right), then just after crossing the bridge, turn left to continue on the B4518 towards Staylittle. Immediately after passing the Staylittle village sign, take the road to the right, signposted to an outdoor centre. Pass through the village, and as the road approaches the top of the ridge after nearly a mile, take a lane to the left. The first track on the left is the start of the walk, and has some limited space to park. SN 9009 9190.

Route

The track reaches some forestry just after crossing a stream, after 1 km. The fields just before this are open access, and offer the safest way to approach the waterfall. Cross into the fields on the right at a suitable point, and keep on the right bank of the Trawsnant stream (note that as of 2015, a new track was under construction, which could provide a route along the Trawsnant stream). Follow the edge of the stream's little valley, skirting the crag near its end, then descending the grassy slope to its junction with the Afon Trannon. The Trawsnant Waterfall is the main waterfall on the Afon Trannon as it drops to the junction, beside the Craig y Gigfran crags.

There are two smaller waterfalls upstream, but they are hard work to get to through the forestry, and protected by awkward crags. It is possible to ascend the crags on the right of the waterfall with great care to get up to them, remaining on the right bank of the river, but I would advise ignoring them unless you are really confident with your abilities.

Return the way you came.
