Trehafod waterfall walk

Including Darren y Pistyll.

Ability requirements (key)

Directions

From Cardiff, take the A470 to the Pontypridd junction, and follow signs for the Rhondda Valleys and Rhondda Heritage Park. This should take you through the mess of the A4058. Once past Pontypridd, 500 yards after passing the first complete pit-head on the right, turn left into Trehafod. Follow the road until it crosses a bridge over the river, then park on the roadside. ST 0426 9103. Be warned that this area has an exceptionally bad reputation for car crime, so don't leave anything at all in the car. You may wish to park a little further on, in the heritage park's parking area.

Route

Return over the bridge, then take the lane to the left, passing under a railway bridge. Continue up the lane to reach the Darren y Pistyll waterfall on the right (where there is also a great view of the Rhondda Heritage Park on the left). On its left side is an old mine level, thought to be the source of the iron weaponry used in the Chartists uprising.

Continue uphill to a cycle path on the left, with bike hurdles. Follow it as it swings down to the left, to cross a bridge over the river. Just after the bridge, turn left onto a cycle path with more bike hurdles. Follow it under the railway line to reach the road. Turn right on the road to reach the start of the walk. (A path on the right just before the road leads to the heritage park's parking area, and this could be used to extend the walk, but this is not included in the main route.)
