Oslo 2011
Spring in shades of grey.
Wales was well into spring, with the flowers blooming, and the trees filling out with green. Oslo, it seems, was still stuck one season behind...
- The Norwegian shore.
- A frosty reception.
- Ice floes in Drammensfjorden. Must be cold down there.
- Fracture patterns in the Oslofjorden ice at the edge of the Bigdøy peninsula.
- Sunset at the Rådhusbrygge docks.
- Tree avenue at the Frognerparken museum
- Museum buildings. Deserve to be in a museum themselves.
- Distant view of the rebuilt Holmenkollen ski jump, and the tower of bodies in Frognerparken.
- Iced over lakes at Frogner Damenne.
- Gulls on the bridge.
- Looks cold.
- Claudio and his Rolleiflex.
- Wait a second ... was that some green? On no, they're just conifers. Never mind then.
- Frognerelva, the smaller Oslo river, whose course is mostly artificial.
- Meanders in Frognerelva.
- Section through the ice.
- Some colour among the grey.
- Tuna market on Verkstedveien.
- Frida.
- Portrait in monochrome.
- Bigdøy Stadion, an unexpected patch of green.
- Fields on Bigdøy.
- Fields on Bigdøy.
- Beach and frozen fjord at Bigdøy Sjøbad. This is sea water, which will have needed a temperature of about -14°C to begin freezing.
- Not everyone likes the cold.
- Ice reflection.
- Hurumhalvøya, the peninsula between Oslofjorden and Drammensfjorden.
- View over three quarters of Oslo from Frogner.
- Spaghetti for what now? Oh ... only us. Right. Aren't languages fun?
- Night view over western Oslo towards the hills of Bærumsmarka.
- Lamp with an access portal to an underground generator that once served this part of the city. There are several different designs around the city.
- Heading into the posh district around Uranienborg. The entire area is filled with embassies and diplomatic residences. And the odd mound of melting snow.
- Even the graffiti here is upbeat.
- Facade at Uranienborg.
- Slottsparken.
- The royal palace.
- Nationaltheatret.
- Misread in English. Laugh if it seems funny. If not, move on, move on.
- Oslo University.
- And its distinctive mosaic.
- The fountain/ice rink in front of Stortinget - the parliament building. Nearly time to switch back into summer mode.
- Fridtjof Nansens Plass, at the town hall.
- Oh boss, I will do this. But do not expect me to be happy about it.
- Fenced in
- Experimental architecture at the Oslo opera house.
- Ice in the tide.
- The opera house is like a mountain in the city; people walk up to the summit, take their summit pictures, then descend the other side.
- Rolling sea mist.
- Misted upper city peaks.
- Emeralds in the opera house.
- A chrome jungle.
- A house of matches.
- Curvaceous.
- Glass perspective
- A sinking wreck.
- Hovedøya rising from the mist.
- The imposing national museum.
- Stables at the Akershus fort.
- Iced seas at the dock.
- Rådhusbrygge pier.
- Ice floes in Oslofjorden in front of Hovedøya.
- Takeoff from the ice. And now it is time for me to do the same.
- Nordmarka from the air.
- WhiteHills beyond the marka.
- Gaustatoppen (1883 metres), at the edge of the Hardangervidda.
- The western marka.
- Holsfjorden, at the edge of the Tyrifjorden lakes.
- The Hardangervidda plateau.
- Southern mountains of Norway. The white line is where trees have been removed to allow space for suspended wires or cables.
- Some of the much larger mountains and fjords in southern Norway, near Dalen. Sæbyggjenuten (1507 metres) is the tallest.
- Coastal islands by Kragerø.
- The Brecon Beacons. In green. Looks like we're back to spring, and this gallery is over.
