Dolwyddelan waterfall walk

Including Maesgwm.

Ability requirements (key)

Directions

From Cardiff, take the A470 past Blaenau Ffestiniog to Dolwyddelan. In Dolwyddelan, at the village centre where there is a pub and church, turn right. The road leaves the village then crosses two stone bridges in quick succession to reach a junction. Turn right. The road swings into Cwm Penanmen and starts following the Sarn Helen Roman road. Just after passing the remains of a village at Tai Penamnen, there is a parking area on the left. SH 7363 5069.

Route

Walk further into the valley along the lane, passing a couple of farms, and continuing on the track that remains roughly level. At the end, it swings left to reach a holiday cottage. Pass through the gates to continue on the track and look up to the right to see the Afon Maesgwm dropping down the multiple steps of the Maesgwm waterfall.

Just after crossing the Afon Maesgwm (really just a stream), take the right branch when the track splits, then go ahead at the next track junction. Stay with the track as it loops around the head of the valley (crossing the infant Afon Cwm Penamnen stream at its head), and returns down the other side. It crosses a track crossroads early on. 2 km after crossing the Afon Cwm Penamnen, a good quality path leads down on the left, crossing a footbridge, to arrive back at the start of the walk.
