Vertical caving terminology and methods > SRT basic terms

The opposite of a free-hang. A pitch where there is a very significant ledge part way down, where the pitch could be divided into separate hangs. Although a small ledge could technically turn a pitch into a broken pitch, the term is usually reserved for a very significant ledge, where the caver could get off the rope and wait, but there is normally nowhere else to go. For it to be a broken pitch rather than two pitches, it would have traditionally been possible to use either a single ladder or two ladders for the pitch, as desired. With SRT, the caver will normally remain on the rope for safety. At the very least, a rebelay, deviation or rope rub protection will be needed to avoid a severe rub point, but there might also be a traverse with a traverse line.
