Vertical caving terminology and methods > Pitches and potholes, general terms
A pitch or other steeply ascending passage, when approached from below. The word is originally French, but it means something completely different there, equivalent to the British pothole. (The word is originally meant "river" in many early European languages, and still survives as "afon" in Welsh, "avon" in England and Scotland, "awon" or "avon" in Cornish, "a'an" in Scots, "aven" in Breton, and variations of aven in some other languages.)
