An aven that is supplied by a surprisingly small stream emerging from a passage at the top, that is too small to enter. The size of the aven appears significantly over-sized compared with the size of the stream, but happens because the erosional power of the falling water is much higher than the same water would have when flowing horizontally. The term "splatter aven" is generally used for avens whose stream also makes a distinctive splattering sound as it hits the floor.
